Fly Recipe Database

Our friends to the south the T.U. Chattahoochee / Nantahala Chapter #692  has a really good Fly Recipe database. (Link) It is broken up in to several pages like Appalachian, Attractor, Bead Head, Biots, Caddis, Dry, Dun, Emerger, Indicator, Mayfly, Midges, Nymphs, Parachute, Peacock, Soft Hackle, Spinner, Stonefly, Streamer, Terrestrials and the Wet fly pages, with Appalachian fly page being my favourite.  You can also search the database by fly color, type, creator. It does not all the patterns we use. George Nymph is one example. But it does have a lot different patterns to chose from.  If you tie your on flies this a good webpage to have in your bookmarks.

ACME Mapper 2.0

A new link has been added to the Links column to the right.  I know there is Google maps and lots of other  map websites out there,  but  ACME Mapper 2.0 gives us the USGS  topo maps for free.  I have not been able to find any other website that works as well as ACME Mapper 2.0.  If you look back at the Trout Fishing Articles  post and read the first article   Small Stream Fishing Part 1: How to Find a Stream of Your Own the Topo maps on ACME Mapper 2.0 is a great tool to help you get started.  I have been using ACME Mapper 2.0 for years.  When I start planing a fishing trip,  I print off maps of the area I am planing to fish, write notes and mark areas I want to concentrate on.  If you are planing a back packing trip buy some waterproof paper at the local office supply or in some outdoors stores.  If you can find any just go to the  (link)  to make sure your maps last through out your trip.

Tie & Lie December Meeting

Thu Walter Babbrsday, December 6  Meeting is at Monte Vista Baptist Church – 1735 Old Niles Ferry Road in Maryville, Tennessee (Map)
Program: Are you interested in learning how to be a better flyfisher?  Interested in having some fun?  Then plan on joining us at the next Little River Chapter TU meeting to learn from our local legends.  Walter Babb, Jack Gregory, and Tim Doyle will be tying flies and sharing stories. This is a great chance to learn from the best.

Walter Babb has spent his whole life fishing the Tellico area as well as the Smokies.  He started tying flies commercially at a young age and is one of the most knowledgeable people in regards to the history and origins of various fly patterns.  Walter also specializes in making fine bamboo fly rods.

Jack Gregory has chased just about every freshwater and saltwater species of fish worth pursuing with a fly rod.  He has probably spent more time fishing the Smokies than anyone else in history and has accumulated a vast knowledge about the fish that swim in those waters.  Jack loves catching Brookies as well as pursuing wary Brown Trout.

Tim Doyle is a professional fishing guide and specializes not only in fishing the National Park waters but also the local tailwaters as well.  Tim is never in short supply of stories, and he’ll be sure to keep you entertained as he demonstrates how to tie some of his unique fly patterns.

There will be a short business meeting to ratify the 2013 LRCTU Officers and Board of Directors, followed by Jack, Walter, and Tim providing fly tying demonstrations and swapping stories.
