August Meeting

August 23 Meeting is at Monte Vista Baptist Church – 1735 Old Niles Ferry Road in Maryville, Tennessee (Map)  at 7pm.  This month’s Program: Knoxville resident Marc Payne will be speaking about his participation in the removal of lake trout from Yellowstone Lake.  “Yellowstone Lake was home to the largest population of native Yellowstone cutthroat trout, yet this vast body of water has more recently become home  to a sinister invader: lake trout.  Lake trout are voracious and long lived predators that reach immense sizes.”  We will also have a Swap Meet after the Program.  If you was not able to purchase the Troutfest SIMMS Microfiber Short Bill Cap the good news we have a new supply in.  The Bad news is this is all we will be able to get.  Make sure to get you one or two at the meeting.  We will also be selling our Troutfest T-shirts and other Simms Hats.  There will also be a Board Meeting starting at 6 pm.

Hope to see you there.

Help Needed for GSMNP Large Stream Sampling on August 14

The Park Service will be conducting a large stream sampling of the Middle Prong of Little River on Tuesday, August 14.  The Park Service can use up to 7 volunteers to help.  We have two volunteers already, so we need up to five more.

The sampling will take place a short distance below the parking area at the upper end of Tremont Road.  We will meet at the parking area between 8:30 – 8:45 AM.   You will need to bring waders that are at least waist high, lunch, water or any other drinks you may want.

If you want to help, please let me know.  If you need waders, there is a good chance we can arrange to have some provided by the Park Service.  I will prepare and distribute a list of volunteers that includes phone numbers so you can be contacted if changes due to weather have to be made.

Thanks.

Chernobyl Ant

Dakota Angler & Outfitter  has a bunch of online fly tying videos that you may want to checkout.  If you fish the Clinch River or other tailwaters you will need to take a look at the Ray Charles Sow bug,  Deep Purple Nymph, Firebead Sowbug and the Sipper Midge.  But now that we are in midsummer. Terrestrials are the main source of food for Trout and the Chernobyl Ant is a great all around summer attractor and hopper imitation.  This pattern uses Brown and Black foam which I think matches a lot of the Hopper and Crickets that are in and around the GSMNP.  Dakota Angler has 72 videos posted online and you are sure to find a new pattern to help you catch more fish.

Materials:
Hook: Daiichi 1280
Thread: Ultra Thread 140
Body: 2 mm Black foam over brown foam
Legs: Round rubber legs
Indicator/Sighter: 2 mm Orange foam
