{"id":906,"date":"2013-10-17T01:26:10","date_gmt":"2013-10-17T01:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lrctu.org\/?p=906"},"modified":"2013-10-18T21:03:36","modified_gmt":"2013-10-18T21:03:36","slug":"october-membership-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/lrctu.org\/?p=906","title":{"rendered":"October Membership Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>President\u2019s Corner<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<a title=\"Oct0ber 2013\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lrctu.org\/Newsletter\/Newsletters\/Oct2013.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> Newsletter<\/a><br \/>\nMike Bryant (mjbryant1954@hotmail.com)<br \/>\nAs I\u2019m writing this article for our monthly newsletter, the shutdown of the U.S. Government is still in place.\u00a0 Obvious to all of us who live in the area, the shutdown has closed the National Parks, including GSMNP.\u00a0 The Parks belong to the American people.\u00a0 Americans created the Park system and it\u2019s Americans who have worked so hard to preserve the Parks for future generations.\u00a0 It\u2019s a shame that politics can have such a negative impact on the things we love.\u00a0 There has to be a better way to run a railroad.\u00a0 Well, at least the fish are happy without all of us chasing them!\u00a0 And I guess I really no longer have an excuse for not chopping that cord of wood.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On a more positive note&#8230;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hatchery Funding To Remain Open<br \/>\nIn a September press release the U.S. Fish &amp; Wildlife Service, in response to a letter from members of Congress (including Senator Lamar Alexander),announced there are no plans to close mitigation hatchery facilities and that funds would be repurposed to ensure the facilities are adequately funded.\u00a0 An internal USF&amp;WS study raised concerns that the Service planned to close the facilities without public input or approval of Congress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>October meeting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wilderness First Aid &amp; Survival (by Kirk Harris)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ever wonder what\u2019s the best tact when you\u2019re caught in the middle of a river in a lightning storm.\u00a0 Come to the October meeting and find out!\u00a0 Kirk Harris (a Little River Chapter member) will provide a presentation on wilderness first aid and survival.\u00a0 Kirk will provide information that is critically important to all of us whether we\u2019re fishing in a stream next to a road, chasing brookies in the back country or hiking in the Park.\u00a0 This is a program you do not want to miss. And be sure to invite any of your fishing friends who may not be TU members.<\/p>\n<p>Many thanks to <strong>Dane Law<\/strong> (Southeastern Anglers) for a great program last month.\u00a0 His report on fishing in local area streams and a program on trout fishing in Patagonia were excellent.<\/p>\n<p>I hope to see you at the October 24 meeting and the November 16 book signing.
